Files too big to send by email?

by: Dewayne Castillo

Have you ever tried to send a large file by email?  If it is a picture being sent to a loved one or those important late documents to your boss, then you know just how stressful it can be. When you attach that large file to your email and hit send, you may think that your computer is frozen because of having to wait so long for it to say "Send Complete". Finally when it does complete you have a sigh of relief until you check your incoming mail to see a message that reads "REJECTED" due to your internet service provider not allowing anything over 5 megabytes in size to be sent. With pictures, most of the time you could send 1 at a time, or reduce the size/quality of the pics to send without issue. Maybe you could do this with other documents also, but why when there are better options?

Here are a few popular ways to get large files to others:

  • Burn files to disk such as a CD/flash drive
  • Purchase a network hard drive with internet sharing capabilities and provide others with a website address and a password to have access to the info.
  • Use a website service such as DropBox.com

My favorite new way to send files is by using Sendoid. It is probably the easiest way to send files anywhere to anyone, and it's free. Before, when I sent files to someone I had to upload them to a remote server and send the person trying to receive the file a link by email. This did work just fine, but I had to wait while the file had completed its upload before I could send the link to be downloaded.

With Sendoid you can just go to the website www.sendoid.com and click and choose the files to share, or download the Sendoid program. Sendoid is a "peer to peer" program, which means that any file selected to be shared goes from your computer directly to your selected party. Once your file is chosen Sendoid will give you a link to email. Now you are just emailing a simple link instead of a sizable file so it should be instant. When a person receives the email, they click on the link and that will start the download to their computer.

The transmission of the file will be secure via a 128bit AES encryption algorithm, link obfuscation, plus you have the option of adding a password too. Sendoid claims that any limits in transfer size are limited based on the resources available on your local machine (usually between 600 megabytes & 1 gigabyte)

It really is the easiest way to send any file. Try it out for yourself and tell me about your experience. When someone asks " How did you find out about that?" tell them "I saw it on SanTanValley.com!".

Hello.  My name is Dewayne Castillo and I am a co-owner of MyBizNow.com which I started over 10 years ago, and founder of San Tan Leads (www.SanTanLeads.com started in June of 2008). I am a tech enthusiast and an artist, strange combination maybe, but it works.  I am however, not a writer. If grammar is your thing you will surely be disappointed. I will not be one to make my high school English teacher proud, but I did get a fine art scholarship to the University of Arizona. That's gotta count for something. What you will find here are simply tips, suggestions and my professional opinion to help you navigate through the world of technology (sometimes other stuff too).  I hope you enjoy my posts and please feel free to contact me directly with any questions you may have.
