The Future Teachers of Florence Unified School District competed in the annual Future Education Association (FEA) statewide competition on March 1-2, and took home awards and scholarships, according to a press release.

The group includes students from both Poston Butte High School and Florence High School. Samantha Guy, Rebecca Victor and Alisha Degaugh of Poston Butte took first place in the Early- Childhood Display Competition where they had to develop skills in planning a developmentally appropriate teaching concept, demonstrate abilities to select appropriate activities for young children and work creatively in planning around a theme.

Each first place winner took home a gold medal and was awarded a $2,500 scholarship renewable for three years to Grand Canyon University. Rebecca Victor took home third place in the Application, Resume and Interview Competition, and Alisha Degaugh took home 3rd place in the Early- Childhood Teaching Pathway competition.

Faith Ryan, also from Poston Butte, received 8th place in FEA Moment Speech. Of all the schools competing, FUSD took home the plaque for “Best Professionally Dressed.” The Future Teacher’s Academy is a Career and Technical Education program that promotes interactive lessons, skills and field experiences to students who want to pursue a career in the education profession.

Taught by Andrea Padilla, the program’s goal is to provide leadership in introducing, recruiting and maintaining individuals who are interested in one of the many high-quality educational fields. Students who participate in this program receive dual enrollment through Central Arizona College.
