The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics began in 1981 when Wichita, Kansas Police Chief Richard LaMunyon saw an urgent need to increase awareness of Special Olympics. He also saw it as an ideal way to involve local law enforcement personnel with the Special Olympics community. Thirty-one years later, that flicker has become a roaring flame of stability for Special Olympic athletes worldwide.

In 2008, the Law Enforcement Torch Runs raised $34 million, making it the movement’s largest grass-roots fundraiser and public relations vehicle. Since then, the impact of the Torch Run has only gotten bigger. In 2011, it raised more than $42 million.

The Torch Run funds raised are only part of what the police officers give. Above all, athletes say the law enforcement officers involved with the Torch Runs give them acceptance, friendship and encouragement.

Runners from the Apache Junction Police Department picked up the Torch at Gold Canyon from deputies of the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office and transported the flame along Apache Trail arriving at the downtown Focal Point shortly after noon on Friday, April 27. They handed off the Torch on the west side of the city to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office for the next leg of the torch’s trip to Phoenix for the annual Special Olympics games.

Special Olympics gives thanks to these officers for their untiring support and salutes them for protecting the country and its citizens. Pictured are Constance Halonen, River Sanchez (with torch), Chief Jerald Monahan and Officer Tyler Gesquiere.
