Spread the Word to End the Word

by: Tisha Castillo

As many publications, including SanTanValley.com, are leaders in driving local culture, we need your support, and the support of your readers, in our Spread the Word to End the Word™ campaign to help make a stand against a word that has gained popularity in culture, but is offensive to many. The “R-word” or “retard(ed)” has found a place in common language and seems to be accepted by most, despite the fact that its use, casual or otherwise, is hurtful to millions of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and those that love them.

The word hurts, even if it is not directed at a person with intellectual and developmental disabilities. For too long, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have had to overcome the challenges society has put forth through stereotypes. It is time for a change and you and your readers can help.

Special Olympics athletes and Best Buddies participants accomplish great things, are members of our local communities and churches and deserve the same respect and dignity that each of us expects from others in return in our daily lives.

Help drive much needed change that will bring acceptance and inclusion to our community – include the R-word into your “Not Fit to Print” publishing guidelines alongside other hurtful and profane words.  These publications reach hundreds of thousands of people in our communities and with that influence you can help us get all of those members of the community to take the pledge at www.r-word.org.  If the role of a local leader like SanTanValley.com is to inform and effect positive change in the community, what better way than helping us to Spread the Word to End the Word and in turn, create communities of acceptance and inclusion for all people?  Please, we need you and your readers to pledge at www.r-word.org.

Sincerely,

Tisha Castillo

Someone who prefers to fight for you, not against you...

I live in a beautiful community known as San Tan Valley.   I believe our elected officials should be held accountable & I have a history of calling them out when needed.  I am a "glass is half full" kind of girl and I love it.  I was honored to receive the 2009 San Tan Area Volunteer of the Year award and just recently was awarded the ACE Jack Camper Scholarship to attend Winter Institute, sponsored by the US Chamber of Commerce.

My husband and I own an IT company, MyBizNow.com, which provides a wide range of products and services to business of all sizes.  We provide graphic design, website development/design, hosting, ecommerce, printing, computer repair and maintenance and more.  We were the 2009 San Tan Area Business of the Year and are proud members of San Tan Leads, ASBA, HREP and the San Tan Valley Chamber. Check out our website for more information.

I was a board member of the San Tan Valley Chamber of Commerce from 2007-2009 and have been the President/CEO of the San Tan Valley Chamber of Commerce since 2010.  We have made amazing progress for both our community and our chamber this past year and surpassed our goals for 2011.  Definitely looking forward to what 2012 will bring.

Some other organizations I am or have been proudly affiliated with:

  • One of the founding CORE members of GSTAC, the Greater San Tan Area Coalition, an organization that was created to bring our area together with one voice so that this community could become proactive with its future.
  • Block Watch Coordinator for the Johnson Ranch Community and also one of the founding members of the Greater San Tan Area Community Block Watch Association.
  • Co-chair for the Tech 4 Kids committee in 2008, the committee pushed to get the override passed to allow FUSD #1 to bring tech into our schools. As a result, the first high school in 94 years to be built in the Florence Unified School District, is a 100% tech school, the first in the state of Arizona!
  • Founded the first Special Olympics group in the San Tan Area, known as the San Tan Bumblebees! Go Bumblebees!
  • Through MyBizNow Gives Back, we were able to donate over $11,000 in cash and gift cards to the athletic and art departments at Poston Butte High School, exceeding our goal of $10,000, through the KIDS FIRST golf tournament and community event which was held Saturday, September 12th, 2009.
  • In 2010, my husband and I created this website - SanTanValley.com, which has become the #1 most visited website in San Tan Valley, AZ - thanks to all of you. It is a FREE resource for anyone interested in learning more about San Tan Valley. It includes news, events, classifieds, homes, pets, businesses and more. Check it out when you can and be sure to like our facebook page.

Although I am very active in our community, please know that when I post here, I will be posting as me, Tisha Castillo.  My posts will not represent any of the organizations that I proudly am a part of, but simply my views as a resident of the area.  I hope you enjoy what I share and that you'll come back often and share your thoughts.
